collages in mosaic, glass & concrete
by Joanna Kessel

November 26 – January 26

Le Roi Fou is delighted to present an exhibition of collages in Venetian gold leaf mosaic, glass smalti & concrete by Edinburgh artist Joanna Kessel.

The work evokes memories and imaginings of places Kessel has encountered within cities, both in Edinburgh and Italy, particularly Venice and Ravenna. A celebration of the beauty in ordinary, chance arrangements, pattern, texture and colour as well as the rich, light reflecting qualities of gold leaf glass mosaic to be found in Byzantine basilica and contemporary Venetian architecture.

Aurum | Gold builds on the success of Kessel’s shows this year as part of Collect at the Saatchi Gallery, London, and at Ravenna Mosaico, the contemporary mosaic biennale in Italy.

Joanna Kessel studied at Edinburgh College of Art and the Royal College of Art, London. She started working with mosaic whilst undertaking several public art commissions in the North of England. Following her return to Edinburgh, she set up Edinburgh Mosaic Studio, and in 2010 was awarded a Creative Development award by the Scottish Arts Council to study contemporary mosaic in Italy. This proved pivotal in the development of her studio practice and was her first encounter with the work of the Venetian architect Carlo Scarpa. She returns to Italy on an annual basis to work and teach. Her work is regularly shown at the international mosaic biennale in Ravenna, Italy, and this year she was sole representative of Scotland within Collect Open, a showcase of work by solo makers at Collect, the prestigious craft and design hosted by the Crafts Council at the Saatchi Gallery, London.
